Would a VHS video bought from America play on a UK video player?

Not unless it's a dual format one ...

The UK uses the PAL system.

Chances are it will, but with a poorer picture quality, as most videos (that I have seen anyway, and I have bought a couple over the last ten years) have been able to play NTSC videos as a standard feature. No guarantees tho - try to find the user manual, or if you can't, google for a copy.
