The song was by Bananarama and was called Venus. This may have been a cover. The words may be found here:-

Yes, it was a cover. The original was by a Dutch group called Shocking Blue back in 1970, it was a huge hit all around the world.

thank you! :]
Bananarama's (female group) decision to cover the Shocking Blue (male group) song without changing 'he' to 'she' etc always puzzled me:

He'll never love you the way that I love you

Are they singing to a gay man hoping to turn him straight, or singing to a straight woman hoping to turn her into a lesbian? Or maybe I just shouldn't worry. ;-)
At the risk of being pedantic 'he'll never love you' is from Na Na Hey Hey not Venus but no, dunno why they left it as he either
D'oh! Yes, quite so. Ahem. My only excuse is that most Bananarama songs tend to sound the same to me :-)
Actually littleoldme, it would have been OK, Shocking Blue's vocalist was a woman - Mariska Veres.
So what you're saying is that apart from getting the wrong song and the wrong sex of the original singer, I've done reasonably OK.

I think I'll retire from this thread while I still have some shred of dignity. :-)
