Just Stop Oil ....

A cry we hear daily.... but without viable, effective and instant alternatives, how can we 'just stop oil'?

... but if we 'just stop oil' what do we replace it with? I did hear a suggestion that we return to sailing ships but is that really a viable way forward? Imagine the millions of tons of freight being transported worldwide under sail - not to mention the effect it would have upon all the passenger ships and ferries across the globe. Just pondering here.

All suggestions welcome.

Don't forget all the plastic involved in manufacturing, what happens with that? They are deluded idiots.
Do they mean stop opening new oilfields

But how can we 'just stop'? How is that possible?

I don't know, bob. They've even targeted works of art - and they're painted with a plant-based oil. They don't seem to have thought it through very well.
To be sustainable goods would have to be walked to the coast, obviously impracticable for large items or items in bulk.
Possibly the JSO crew should stop eating bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits, advocados, any exotic fruit, coconut, rice, pasta, quinoa, olive oil etc etc etc. No more clothes or shoes manufactured in India, China, Far east. No more pharmaceuticals, nothing made by machinery which needs oil for lubrication. No crops requiring insecticides or fertilisers, in fact grain only harvested by scythe and milled by wind or water.
The fact is we live in a capitalist, industrialised society, globally interdependent world.
I have no time for JSO proponents who seem to be largely middle aged, middle class, naive, non productive people with too much time on their hands
The answer is that it isn't possible short term, naomi. If they don't know that then they really are deluded to a serious extent.
Work is underway to replace oil, but it will take a long, long time and, as I think most would agree, there's no-point in demonstrating in the UK which is such a tiny contributor to global heating and also working to reduce it.

I hear that JCB have rejected out of hand the idea of batteries (thank goodness - mining for materials is devastating chunks of the world - and has got a hydrogen engine in the developmental stages.

Toyota and Honda have also rejected the idea of electric cars and are also looking at hydrogen. So, eventually we should be able to reduce the need for oil drastically, but we can't 'Just Stop' it..
Untitled will be along shortly with all the answers.

Or maybe just some more preaching.
'Toyota and Honda have also rejected the idea of electric cars'

Somebody needs to tell the people producing the Honda e and the Toyota BZ series of vehicles then.
Very much like the above posts, you can't just stop.
But there are many products on the market that we could do without importing, and producing in this country, mainly the plastic junk, especially coming from China. Super markets have made some progress, such like replacing plastic meat trays for other materials, but really a drop in the ocean to what needs to be done in this area alone. Transport however remains a big problem, alone with many others.
along with many others^^
I suppose small nuclear reactor powered ships would be a viable alternative to sailing ships but lubrication is still required for bearings and shafts etc.
These zealots won't be happy until we all get on Tom Pearce's Grey Mare.
Might help hard pressed rose growers though.
just looking at the last 2 answers - and the tendency of JSO's philosophy to veer toward the hare-brained - put me in mind of this........
Mushroom

Funnily enough I was going to post Ramblin Sids somerset nog when I posted earlier about Tom Pearce.
I used to listen to him on his sunday radio show.
JSO might need to rebrand or change
their name! How about JSKTP!
they want new oil ventures to be halted and for sustainable energy generation to take their place... they are not agitating for the existing oil infrastructure to be disbanded they want its expansion halted
Just melt down 'just stop oil' protesters and use the resulting fat.
JSKTP...
Just stop killing the planet! That doesn't only focus on oil!!
Obviously as one aber said, give us clear alternatives!
Just Stop Oil opposes the United Kingdom granting new new fossil fuel licensing and production agreements. It also demands investment in renewable energy, and that "buildings have better thermal insulation to avoid waste of energy."

The sailing ship idea was only part of Cargill's CO2 Challenge:
