Prompted by Togo's post about Elliot Randall, I've been thinking about my favourite guitar solos. Off the top of my head:

Jeff Baxter on 'My Old School' by Steely Dan
Larry Carlton on 'Kid Charlemagne' by Steely Dan
Amos Garrett on 'Midnight at the Oasis' by Maria Muldaur

^ I saw Chris Spedding recently. He still plays with Bryan Ferry
Some great tracks flagged up, but no way do you miss this Guy out. Good thread Goalie. Is your "other nickname" one of our 4 legged friends BTW? (^_*)

Love this from Mark Knopfler and it reminds me of sitting on the bar at the Shepherd's Bush Empire watching him.

Yes - we need some Neil :

or even

The best riff - and a decent solo too :)

I dind't mention Neil because I knew Togo would. :-)
Another epic.

^didn't!
I don't know the difference between a riff and a solo. Well, I know what a solo is but is that not a riff?
Then there is the man who invented guitar solos.

"Riff" is abbreviation of rhythm and, in rawk music anyway, is generally a repeated musical pattern played on (electric) guitar underneath the vocals.

A "solo" is when an individual instrument, usually but not always an electric guitar, plays a melody in an instrumental interlude above the other instruments.

Free's "All Right Now" is a classic example both of one of the most famous riffs and solos in popular music. Mark Knopfler plays the famous riff as an introduction and then underneath Paul Rogers' vocals. The solo begins after the first couple of minutes.

C'mon guys, if we're having Neil Young (and we must have), let's have the best.

Paul Kossoff on All Right Now - surely?
Another favourite band from my "smoky" daze(days) Billy Corgan could play to make your heart break or to make you have a rage attack.

D'oh! Yes, Paul Kossoff of course. Had Knopfler in mind as had been reading the earlier answers. Sorry
I let it play and it ran into this. More magic from the Smashing Pumpkins.

Hairs rise on the back of my neck as the slide comes in just after 5 mins ... but the whole performance is epic :

Mental, but boy can he play.
