I Use AA - no probs & quick to respond. Recently, while I waited for a tow-truck the RAC pulled up to offer help. So think both give a good service - let your purse choose.
When I delivered vehicles for a living, the company I worked for had cover through both the AA and the RAC. Some of the vehicles I collected, for delivery to auction, were in a very poor condition, so breakdowns were quite frequent. (My record was five different vehicles breaking down in a week, with three of them in one day, including the one in the middle lane of the M25!). So I frequently had to wait for either the AA or the RAC to arrive. I never really noticed any difference in their service.

For some cheaper alternatives (e.g. Autonational Rescue, which I can recommend) and an anecdote, from me, about the AA, please see here:

I am disabled and find the only breakdown people to provide a service suitable are the RAC they will even supply a loan car free for three days while yours is off the road. they are the best in all ways. you can pay monthly if you want
RAC paid for with Tesco clubcard vouchers
I have been with RAC for over 20 years. Have used them 3 times. Excellent service on each occasion.
Our breakdown cover is with Insurance Co, (Swinton) when I had an accident on Monday morning breakdown truck was there in about 15mins, car taken to Garage repaired and back to us by Wednesday, great service. Loads of Insurance companies offer breakdown service with Car Insurance
Have you seen the offer from Total service stations, buy 30 litres of fuel and you get 14 days free breakdown cover, i've not had to call on them (yet) so cannot say if its a good service.
