I have just received a bill from Thrifty car hire charging me for going through a toll without paying back in Feb. We thought we had gone through one just after we picked the car up so the next day when we went through a toll we asked the assistant what we should do. She said don't worry you are allowed to do it once. The toll charge was $0.50 and the administration fee is $25.00 !!!
Do you think we should pay?!!

It's only a guess but I would imagine that if the toll company or Thrifty instigated legal action to recover the money and you didn't pay then you might have problems with immigration should you visit America again. Worse case scenario, you would be denied entry and have a warrant issued for your arrest.
I'm assuming you gave them a card when you hired the car. Part of their terms and conditions will state that any fine they receive can be charged straight to that card, along with their admin charge. By signing for the car you've agreed they can do this. Chances are they've already charged your card, I'm afraid. I hope I'm wrong, but suspect I'm not.
This is a standard procedure with the large car rental companies.
