Hi everyone. Can someone clarify the rules on MOTs? My MOT is due to expire on 1st August 2008. I will be away on holiday on this date. If I get the car MOT'd on 1st July can the expiry date on the new MOT be dated 1st August 2009? I seem to recall that it is possible to get a 13 month MOT. Am I right?

You can get your MoT done up to one calendar month before the current one expires. The new one will expire 12 months after the existing one does so, as your question suggests, you have in effect a 13 month MoT certificate.

Thanks Judge. I thought it was possible. Cheers.
And don't forget to take your old MOT certificate with you and ask for a post dated certificate, or you may find that the MOT station dates the new certificate from that day, rather than from the date the old one runs out.

Jugglering - Good thinking. Will do. Cheers
the computerisation system will automatically ttell the tester that there is existing time left on the old cerificate.
If you look at the new MOT certificate it tells you the earliest date when you can take it for it's next MOT ....
you must take your old mot certificate to the station to qualify for this,so dont forget it,otherwise you will only get one for 12 months.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
Sorry to be pedantic but Ist July is one day too early to get your new mot forward dated to 1st August as it it more than one month. The new computerised system will only allow forward dating from 2nd July. On 1st july it will not allow forward dating at all. Most mot stations will allow you to bring it back later but its a job slot lost for them! You dont need to produce your old certificate, its all on computer.
Sorry Norm, but I confirm you do not have to take the old certifiicate any more, since computerisation.
I only mentioned taking back the old certificate in case birdie's MOT station wasn't yet computerised.... mine has only just gone over to 21st century technology .... (well last July anyway)
Aren't they all now?
yes . they have been for a couple of years now it was rolled out round 3 years ago. every mot station in the uk is now computerised and shoul have been for at least 18 months
well to be totally accurate.. Its not one calender month at all .. but rather 30 days.. so it depends on how many days are in that month,,,

rather silly i know.. but i have come accross this a few times while testing early.
