I am aware that on a manual gearbox there can be a problem with a slipping clutch.
My question is "Can this problem occur with an automatic g/box - though possibly with a different name.
Any suggestions please.

not really, there is not a clutch in a auto box,as such,it sounds like it might need topping up with oil if its playing up or it might have a gear cog gone which means a new box,but get it looked at asap.

it could be water from the radiator leaking into the transmission fluid ,if the fluid cooler is is at the bottom of the radiator. if it is you will need the auto box overhauled!!!
check the fluid if it is milky then this could be the problem!
