ring gear on nissan primera p reg possibly

HI Attempted to start this vehicle,at first the starter motor engaged, and then it sounded like the ring gear fell off.difficult to explain but it sounded like something rattling,nothing has jammed...

Attempted to change water pump on 1.8lL Ford zetec ghia.Half way through decided to do timing belt,with out following the set procedures.How do you redo the timing from scratch.Not to many sarcastic...
