ring gear on nissan primera p reg possibly

HI Attempted to start this vehicle,at first the starter motor engaged, and then it sounded like the ring gear fell off.difficult to explain but it sounded like something rattling,nothing has jammed push starts fine.local garage says gearbox needs to come out 6 hours labour + partsHow difficult would it be to attempt this at home.To nice a vehicle to scrap

You would be very unlucky if the ring gear has fallen off (highly unlikely) why dont you remove the starter motor and check the toothed dog and see if that has collapsed, if it looks ok look in the aperture where the starter goes you should be able to to see the the ring gear.
If it is there try and turn it with a screwdriver, if it turns and the engine doesnt then it will have come loose on the flywheel therefore the box will have to come (not recommended at home ) but if the engine turns when you prise the ring gear it is not the problem. To fit a new ring gear you would need heating gear i.e. oxy/acet the ring gear is heated placed on the flywheel and allowed to shrink fit whilst cooling, as I said not really a home job. It could be the bendix spring, the drive from the started motor goes though this to the toothed dog. It must make a rattle if it is brocked. Remove starter motor and see if it is broken, get a recon starter motor, or find somebody to put another spring on it.
