my Dad had to retake his test every 5 years after he was 70 but he passed it ok
I am all in favour of it... until I reach that age... then I will want them to change it back again :)
I know this might be a bit controversial but why not make anyone guilty of a motoring offence have to resit the test and not be able to drive again until they have passed it.

Head down, helmet on. lol.
My Mum was a perfectly good driver, but at the age of 74 decided that it was time she stopped driving. I really admired her for making this decision. It did help though that she would have had to face driving on the opposite side of the road to the one she was used to. She had previously lived in Germany. Makes me wonder though -just how will I get on without a car when I reach the age where I feel it is time to give up driving? My car is a major part of my independence! A very frightening thought!!! As for retaking the test at a certain age? - I think it is a good idea, but ,perhaps should be free and include a hearing, reaction and eyesight test.
well my dad had to have a medical and he didn't pay a huge amount for the medical or the test either.
The insurance premiums would seem to suggest that it's those under 30 who need refresher courses.
As an ex trucker,we had to have a regular medical after 50.
I believe thhat would be a good thing for everyone, especially eye tests. I was told I needed glasses for driving,I hadn't realised how badly my eyes had deteriorated
is this a new rule or something?

i hope so!

because i am being given lessons now with my 80 year old dad and he is driving me insane with his moaning - i am sure he'd fail it, because he keeps telling me to do things that are not right and nitpicking
There's quite a few people 'over a certain age' who will never have taken a driving test in the first place. They will have learnt in the forces in the war and just been given a licence. They will ahve driven well enough and long enough if they haven't yet killed themselves, so apart from sight tests and the medical, which already exist, then no. #
The courts have power to order a retest if it's necessary.

Another idea - young people who can't spell and keep asking dumb questions should go back to school until they can.

I do think that is a good idea dzug. :-)
