Does washing up liquid really damage car paintwork or is it just a myth created by people who sell special car shampoos?

Washup does contain very aggressive detergents, to get grease off pans. In general terms, it is stronger than you need for a car wash, so why use it? Car shampoo isn't that expensive.

Washing up liquids contain salts which can damage your cars paintwork. Car shampoos don't.
