A young man knocks on the door. I vaguely recognise him from seeing him up the local shops a few times. Never causing any trouble, just walking about. His clothes have seen better days and he looks pretty scruffy.
Am waiting for him to ask for money, but instead he says do you have any food you could spare? I’m starving. This completely threw me, but I said hang on wait there. I obviously shut the door whilst I went to the kitchen and put some food and a drink in a carrier bag for him.
Went back to door expecting him to have vanished but there he was standing patiently. Gave him the bag and he kept thanking me and then walked off.

What would you have done?

The same.
I would have done the same as well.
I certainly would have shut door first! I'm sure I'd done the same tho, regards finding him some food & drink. Well done Smow..

I felt so bad for him. To actually have to resort to knocking on someone’s door for food. : (
Exactly the same.
Good on you Smow for helping him out.
There used to be a homeless guy living in a tent across the road from my block of flats and some people used to cook him a hot meal occasionaly. That was until the council turned up one day and chucked his tent and a few belongings into a truck just before xmas...
I wouldn't open the door to a dodgy looking individual and neither would Mrs sqad.
We live in a violent society.
You did a good deed, we all do at times but seeking in a rather round about way acknowledgement or recognition for doing same, changes the perception of why indeed you did it. I would have brought him in, maybe I live in a more relaxed community, who knows, I would have offered him a warm meal indoors, maybe he was hungry for a chat too, it's lonely on the streets, I'm sure a quick rummage in you OH's wardrobe would have sorted his clothes that have seen his better days, all that aside, búla bas smow, you did great to feed the poor guy.
//I wouldn't open the door to a dodgy looking individual//
How would you know he was dodgy looking unless you opened the door?
The same.
Well done, Smowball!
Dodgy....unshaven, unknown, badly dressed, old clothes.........
The same as Smow, I certain!y wouldn't take a chance on letting him in. Smow, keep us updated.
Living alone, I would have looked out the window to see who was knocking, seen the state of him and NOT answered the door. Better to be safe than sorry ..
Even if we did let him in and feed him......we wouldn't announce it on AB.

Ducksie I might be reading your comment in the wrong way but are you suggesting I posted this for praise??
I was simply asking what everyone else would do.

// How would you know he was dodgy looking unless you opened the door? //

In our case CCTV covers the lot.
If you haven't been touched by it already, Austerity is coming down your street soon.

So sad that in the past, Some ABers have poured scorn on the plight of those relying on benefits, food banks and charity.

Many have been so quick to condemn. Very sad.

He was in my porch so there was no way of knowing who was knocking on door till I opened it. I work from home and get lots of deliveries so door being knocked on is a regular occurrence.
I didn't say you were posting for praise but i live in an area where people do good deeds and no one ever hears of it
