It's a beautiful, barren and eerie place.

We had a (very quick) family picnic there many years ago. It was a lovely day and having had already prepared the picnic it was the first suitable landscape we came to.

However, because of its' history we all felt uncomfortable sitting on a picnic rug on the moor and so left after about 15 minutes.

I only live a few miles away, in Middleton. It was quite dark last night, and it's suddenly gone very murky in the last few minutes. I've got ash all over my car but we're not in any danger as we have the concrete jungle of Oldham between us and the fires. Brady and Hindley have got nothing to do with this.

Not the fire, but the smoke.
In Hyde so if the wind (what wind?) direction is wrong, the plume drops on us. Keeping the windows closed at the mo.

presumably it is the peat that is burning is it ?

one of the canal banks at Worsley is coal *** and that catches fire periodically
