Difficult one here re CAR NOISE! Intermittent noise from engine like two disks rubbing together whilst driving and at standstill with engine ticking over. It sounds bad but not knowing anything about the workings of an engine I've not got a clue.

It's been into main dealer to be looked at, they didn't find anything related to it nor heard the noise. It goes away at times....then for no reason it comes back. Weird especially when it's not happening all the time so someone could hear it. Any ideas folks....difficult I know? Car Nissan micra don't know if that helps identify a problem. Thank for help if you can give it.

The noise occurring whilst you are stationary with the engine running might make it easier to locate. I used to use a long rod, stick one end against my ear and the other on bits of the engine - starter motor, alternator, A/C pump, power-steering pump etc.
I would be checking out the dual mass flywheel. I once had similar on a Mondeo STD GTI. Noisy when idling, and "cold" running with low revs. After the motor warmed up it used to stop. Could be the clutch itself of course. Couple of other suggestions here.

I am a total novice on car engines.
My husband had similar recently in his car. Noise from engine that was louder when idling. He had a new alternator fitted and it was fixed.

Thanks for replies. Fly wheel sounds what I would interpret to be..ha as if I know but it's definitely a spinning rubbing sound and from a large component if I were to hazard a guess and it IS a guess.

It happens driving along it must sound terrible outside can hear it with window open. Then when I stop the car the noise is still there and seems to slow down but without actually stopping.

Forgot to say the car is automatic. Trouble is unless the noise is happening at time of inspection by the mechanics they can't find anything. Aarrgghh. Just don't want to be out in it and it fouls up big time.
Automatic. That changes thing a bit (possibly). I think the Automatic Gearbox in the Nissan Micra is the CVT type(Continuous Variable Transmission)and is ...........belt driven. That could cause the symptoms described if the belt is loose or the pulleys worn.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level? Plus has it ever been changed?
Worn bearings on alternator or water pump maybe.

Thanks for your help. I don't touch the engine so don't know transmission levels. Car serviced every year and not many miles travelled so think I'm going to have them look at it again. To me it doesn't sound like a 'belt' noise....it really sounds like two disks (?) skimming/rubbing together. So annoying when it's intermittent and rarely the right people hear it.
