Looking at getting a new (to us anyway!) car next year.

We've always had diesels for the last 10 years or so, but are diesels the economical sensible and environmentally sound car they were always considered to be?

Would you go diesel or petrol?

I'm amazed to find something that sunny dave and I agree on!
Bhg .....You have omitted to include the initial cost to buy each of the vehicles.
The fact that the exhaust is carcinogenic would put me off
Would I go diesel or petrol.
Depends on the car, ie ferrari = petrol, Ford Mondeo= probably diesel.
In the current climate I don't think quoting emissions data from any car or fuel holds much water in an argument. Never mind VW, I bet one day we'll find out they've all been at it.
So would I, Prudie.

It's not just VW diesels either now, looks like they lied about petrol engine emissions now.

Yes I heard that too Tony, thin end of the wedge springs to mind.
Personally, I would always go petrol because they sound better. As someone who doesn't worry about how economical a car is my 3 litre petrol makes me smile every time I start it up and speed away. Sorry but I love it.
So, one simple question, why are London taxis running on diesel????
Agree with you Aliflump
Haha thanks Prudie.

Two out of three of our cars are diesels. The 320d Beemer we'll probably run into the ground (if we live long enough) it's great fun and very economic for long journeys. The Yeti 177bhp 4x4 will be the first to go but not for a year or so. My Octavia Vrs Estate (petrol) will be around for while yet until something with more powerful turns up.
I always think about the U.S. when it comes to diesel/gas.
Because gas is cheaper most of their leisure marine craft use petrol engines.
Petrol is dangerous because of its low flashpoint and sits like a gas vapour in the bilges of a boat ready to easily explode when the engine is fired up at the start of a new season of sailing. Their cars are all petrol guzzlers.
Why are the MAC heavy haulage long distance trucks and the long distance, high mileage Greyhound buses fed on Diesel?
Cheaper ,more efficient, longer lasting low revving engines
Lower Passenger fares and freight charges for the consumer in the stores.
I've only ever driven diesels as hire cars for work. I hate the fact they have no acceleration until you've crawled up to about 40mph.

Prudie, both our diesels hit 60 in about 8 secs
What, going over a cliff? :-)
Seriously, the hire car factor is probably significant but that's my perception of diesels.
