My friend has just had their car in for a service, MOT, 2 new tyres, brake pads and discs. Not at a main dealer but a well known chain of garages. They were charged £890! Fair or ripped off?

Depnds on the car but that doesn't sound outragious. I'll be more specific if you tell me the car make model year etc.
I almost choked when I read this! Rip off I'd say.
Tyres have a huge range in price.
How much??????????????

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<thud>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
very possible, as said tyres can be in excess of £200 each
Depends on the car. About right for a luxury model.
All I can say to that is I'm glad I haven't got a car. My friend filled up with petrol yesterday and I was shocked to hear the attendant ask for £50. When I started motoring (a mini) many years ago my petrol cost 50 pence. Unbelievable, but true.
As above.... what car?

If you have a Ferrari then that's probably a good deal, if you have a Fiesta then that's a rip off.
on a 2l diesel ford i would pay up to £275 for service (depending on which one) £150+ per tyre.
the price doesnt seem like an immediate rip off, surely your friend would have got a quote first though.
!!!!?????? Attendant Starbuck - ah those were the days my friend.
Er.................... Ripped off wouldn't be k...k fit by any chance?
Just booked in my mondeo for full service and mot £180 thought that was a fair price!
Ive got a Volvo and that would be a fair price for a main dealer to do that work on my car, infact i would be happy with that amount!
It also depends on the service (how many miles it has done).

Some service includes the replacement of the timing chain / cam belt which can be a couple of hundred pounds in itself.

Two new tyres can be about £100 for the two if they are cheap no name makes (I had this done the other day for just over £100 for 2 tyres), on the other hand two "brand name" tyres can be over £100 each.

An MOT is about £40 or so.
There is also Labour charges and VAT on most of it too. Actually analysing it, it doesn't sound too bad. I paid over £200 for one tyre on my car and that was the cheapest I could find (for a proper brand)!
your friend should ask for an itemised bill as that does seem rather steep for all she had done.

If it was KK Fit that it's definitely a rip-off.
£170 per tyre on my car (225/45/17) and thats only Pirelli's not Continental's or Michelin's which seem to be the dearest each time i make enquiries. A lot of money i think!
Mr. Cupid says if it aint a roller, it's a bit dear!!
What can you say? why doesn't your friend check out the prices before getting the car serviced? the only thing I can say to your friend, it serves the right for been so stupid, ask him / her to get an account of what's been done then come back on here & tell us.
As R1 says what car - if its a Rolls or Ferrari. If its run of the mill VW, Vauxhall, Ford etc its a rip off.

Was stuff repaired during the service?
