I'm curious about something and maybe someone here can enlighten me. Why is it that some people will drive at 40mph in a 60mph zone even if all conditions are fine? I know 60 "is the limit and not the target" but in my opinion 20mph lower than the limit is excessively slow (conditions depending of course). So, I'm intrigued...why?

scared/cautious/texting/rubbish driver/car/my mother (if it's nearer 25mph) :o)
They may be in no hurry. Which is ok if it is not single lane. If it is then it is lack of consideration for others, or maybe deliberate antagonism. A few may be nervous drivers who either have not been driving long, or who are sufficiently old they no longer trust themselves are speed. I think your guess is probably as good as mine.
I am of the opinion that any one that can not drive at a reasonable speed on a clear open road in good conditions should not be on the road. In a driving test it's called keeping up with the flow of the traffic and if you don't do it you would fail.
too many reasons to list i should think.

I often slow my driving down if there is someone sat right on back of my car. why should i risk them shunting me if i have to suddenly stop from 60mph.

if they are doing 40 in a 60 then at least you can overtake them when the option arrises.

I tend to agree with that Chuck. It reminds of when I used to wait to get picked up for work a few years back. As I stood waiting for my lift, the same car would drive past me every morning. For over a year (probably more but I stopped waiting there) the car had one of these P plates on it, presumably to warn other drivers that this was a 'new' driver and to take caution. I always thought that if that person felt the need to have that P plate on for so long, they probably shouldn't be in the driving seat.
I think they could be nicked for causing an obstruction.

You can fail your driving (or motorbike, in my case) test for ...

... "failing to make adequate progress on the road".

Yeah, I did get told off in one of my tests for going too slowly along a 50mph road.
There is a bloke round this way that I often get caught behind on my way to work on a fairly wide B road, I can quite comfortably drive at 60MPH along the whole of the road, the bloke I get caught behind drives it at 30-35MPH for all of it!

He drives an Aston Martin DB9!
Nice car, though.

He doesn't want to get any of the bugs on the paintwork that get splatted accross your screen when you go a bit faster.
Agreed, but if you're going to go everywhere at 30-35MPH you may as well get a Micra!
If *I* was driving a DB9, I, too, would want to extend the time I my journey time....
Or, once more, in English.............:o/

If *I* was driving a DB9, I, too, would want to extend the time my journey took.
If I was driving a DB9 I'd enjoy myself and do the journey twice :)
I,m sure many will disagree with me but I don't think a driving licence should be for 57 years, assuming you passes when you were 17, I think people should be retested regularly every ten years at the most, five would be better, that way incompetent drivers could be weeded out or given the help they need to gain confidence again. Just my opinion anyway.

I'd extend the journey too Jack. I'd just go the long long long way round and drive at 100 the whole way. :o)
That should be 53 years and passed.

I agree D97. I'm not sure I would say every 5 or 10 years, but alot changes over 50+ years. I know when my Dad is driving, I close my eyes and grab on the jesus handle for dear life.
The road from the M25 down to Brighton is a good road for a bit of a blast, Milly.

But, sometimes, it is just crawling with Police cars, including unmarked cars.

Luckily, it's an "all or nothing" with them. It you get as far as Gatwick without seeing a Police car, then they are all somewhere else today, and you can spank it the rest of the way.

Hypothetically, of course.
Question Author
I took that road a few weeks ago JJ as we had a little outing to Brighton for the day. Unfortunately I had been pre-warned about the police in Brighton and as I didn't know the road, I kept to the limit. But now I do know!
