That does look very high, but you are certainly looking in the thousands for your first car, at your age. Could you not be a named driver on say your parents' insurance policy, until you build up some no claims bonus of your own?

What excess are they quoting you for? Increasing your excess (i.e offering to pay more accident repair costs yourself if you have to claim) will bring the premium down a bit.
Add a parent as an additional driver. Not the main driver as this is illegal and could make your insurance invalid, but as a named driver it is perfectly legal and will help reduce the cost.
This assumes your parent has a good driving history!
As Hc4361 indicates, adding a more experienced driver onto your own policy can often see a substantial reduction in your premium. (Boxtops suggestion, of doing it the other way round, could lead to you and/or a parent being sentenced to up to 10 years imprisonment for 'fronting'. It's strictly illegal!).

Additionally, try all of the options for insurance coverage. i.e. check out 'third party only', 'third party, fire & theft' and 'fully comp'. Surprisingly, 'third party, fire & theft' is often cheaper than 'third party only' and it's not uncommon for 'fully comp' to be even cheaper still.

A standard Ford Ka is in Insurance Group 10, with some models being in Group 11 (and the Sportka in Group 15 or 16), so you're at the cheaper end of the range of premiums. However switching to something like a Fiat Panda or Skoda Fabia would take your insurance down to Group 2.

Some insurers also offer substantial discounts for Pass Plus:

There is an organisation that fits some sort of telemetrics to your car and, providing they can tell that you're driving in a sensible manner, will reduce your premiums accordingly. Quite bizarrely, I met the guy who runs this company the other day. I'm likely to see him again in the next week or so. I'll post to this question once I know hos contact details.
CIS do something similar, SeaJayPea:

i-Kube is a variation of it:

Coverbox also uses monitoring technology:

Good one Chris. The guy I was talking to claimed that he was the only provider. Odd.

Unfortunately it's not the cost of the car which is particularly relevant, Eddie. It's the cost of the life-long care for injured people (running into many millions of pounds), which might be required if the young driver causes an accident resulting in really serious injuries.

//..Could you not be a named driver on say your parents' insurance policy..//

Why is the above illegal ?
Forget the above
Try contacting Adrian Flux, they have a website. they specialise in insuring young drivers, modified cars etc. good luck, and post the quote if you insure with them, let me know how you get on, Mike.

ive sorted it now guys, my mum baught me a 2011 vauxhall corsa limited edition which was £14,000 and my insurance is 3500.
Pay monthly by DD if possible so if they do cancel midstream you dont loose too much money.
Pfft not bad for some eh ;) .. I was looking at the new corsas as well cos you get really good deals on them. Just to make you feel better, your insurance will go down heaps for next year. I just renewed mine and it was exactly half of what it was last year when I just passed my test.
