As this is the follow up to Life on Mars, would I need to have watched Life on Mars to understand this? Or is it a stand-alone series that can be understood without watching life on mars?

I think it would be understood without watching LoM, as it is basically a completely different series, however, there will more than likely be references to life on mars and the excitement for me will be the fact that it is a spin off series (I hope they make reference....).
A lot of the interest in the new series will be seeing how the characters have ( or haven't ) changed in 10 years or so!
Obviously if you didn;t see LoM, there may be some in jokes and references you may not understand - but if its good as LoM, it'll be worth watching anyway!
Apparently she is a DCI in realtime and has been studying Sam Tyler(the guy who went back in time) and what happened to him so she will actually have more of an insite in to whats happening than Sam Tyler did in Life on Mars. So there may be some references made to this in the series. Although, I never watched LoM but intend to watch this and I have an idea of what happened in LoM so that should help.
