I've heard from the Crematorium my beloved ashes are ready for collection.. we had a Direct Cremation as discussed by us both well before he was I'll...we will have a celebration of his life later in the year.
I personally don't get the sprinkling of ashes idea. Not something I would do if left to me. My husband requested his ashes sprinkled at a favorite spot of his..I respect his wishes..
We are a very small family, so am surprised at 2 requests I've had..one telling me she wants it before she goes on holiday early September!
The other wants 'some' of the ashes for a memorial arrangement they are having made.
I'm not sure how I feel about rushing to do anything with them just yet.
I could be unpopular if I speak up.

Re sprinkling.
We are all made of star dust. It forms our body for a short while, then returns to the planet we lived on. It is the natural way of things. So having a special occasion marking when we are returned, by the sprinkling of the ashes, is no bad way to mark the life of the individual.
But again, each to their own.

We sprinkled my dad's ashes in Loch Earn, it was about a year after his death. For the first year his ashes sat in his armchair which was in front of his favourite window.
The day out to Loch Earn was a really enjoyable and fun day out. It was just me and my little brother. We retold 'dad' stories in the car.

Thank you all for interesting points. Left to me I'd never collect the ashes of anyone. Like Sqad I cannot believe the ashes one is given are anything but wood ash. It's our only Grandson that would like a small amount..I'm not sure what form it will take but he is having something made with a space for the ashes..he and Grandad were more than best buddies. They idolised each other.
He has visited this evening, we had a heart to heart..he agreed there is no rush to do anything.
