Old Cinema Films

If I remember correctly, cinemas used to show cartoons before the main feature film. Can anybody tell me how many years this went on for and when it was stopped?

They do still do it in a local Cinema near me (which only has 1 screen and you can sit in either the circle or the stalls), and after the cartoon they have the ushers stand at the front with ice cream etc, it's really old fashioned but really nice at the same time!! But apart from that cinema no others that I know of still do it.

The last time I saw a supporting cartoon in a mainstream cinema (Odeon) was in 1982.

Just a theory, but I suspect that it's to do with squeezing in more showings/day...

The good old days,when you could sit where you wanted,or even remain in your seat and watch the movie again at no extra charge.Im only in my mid thirties,but I remeber it well.At our local odeon (now replaced by a multi screen cinema) we used to have either a cartoon,or a short movie,then it was intermission time when a kind of kaleidoscope pattern moved across the screen to some dodgy 70s music.The ushers would also move to the front to serve ice creams.I do actually go to the multi screen cinema,but sometimes I would just love to experience cinema how it was when I was a kid.
