Someone told me that it is much cheaper to use the washing machine at night rather than in the day. Is there any truth in this? if so how much cheaper ?

I don't know. Not in the US. I'm running mine right now. 10:36 MST (-7:00GMT)
Only if you have an economy 7 meter. They are normally only fitted to houses with night storage radiators.
On your bill it should say 'Two Rate' or give two sets of readings. If not try pressing the blue button on the meter to see if it cylces through different rates. R1 R2 etc The older meter have two sets of dials Low and Normal.
No because there is a danger of fire. Not very good when you are sleeping.
Millarat is right - any fireman will tell you that the washing machine is onbe of the biggest causes of fire in the home - dont put it or the dishwasher on at night.
