We were watching the highlights of this earlier and someone asked why some of the guardsmen had white stripes showing they were corporals/sergeants but others had yellow stripes. Does anyone know?

There are lots of info here. you may get your answer. I could be wrong, but I think it`s to do with the regiment their in. The buttons also signify which regiment they are in. Can`t remember it now, but the buttons are singles, in twos, threes, & fours.

Ps. And ofcouse they have different plumage in their bearskins.

Thanks beejaybee, I've read through the info but can't find the answer. Interesting link though.

There are five regiments of guards and they have single buttons pairs etc all the way to five. The order is:

Guards(Grenadier)

Courageously(Coldstream)

Serve(Scots)

In(Irish)

War(Welsh)

You can now dazzle your friends!

That`s good The Welsh Guards have the most.
The Foot Guards are different to other regiments. a Lance Corporal wear two chevrons on their arms, and a Full Corporal is called a Lance Sergeant and wears three chevrons which are white on their dress uniform. A Full Sergeant's three stripes are a Gold colour. The reason Guards Lance Corporals wear two stripes and not one is because it is said that Queen Victoria said " it did not look right for her Guards to wear only one stripe".
