Can you suggest a scary movie for Halloween, cinema/video? Not boring old blood and gore, teenagers getting drunk then going on a stabbing spree rubbish but a really gripping tense thriller full of suspense? Agh!!!

If you haven't already seen it, I'd suggest 'The Others' or the japanese version of 'The Ring'... both are good scary films! 'The Ring' in particular had me sleeping with the lights on that night!
The old (60's) film version of 'The Haunting' a group of people go to an old house and hold a saunce you don't actually see anything but it was scary stuff.
Stir of Echos with Kevin Bacon is really gripping and it's not all blood and guts - it's full of suspense. Another one which I liked was Bless this child, also very gripping.
The Vanishing (the original, not the dreadful Hollywood remake). Utterly chilling and brilliant.
I go along with Quatro and 60's version of The Haunting. The thunderous noise outside the bedrooms and the looking for the dog had me cringing (I was only 10 at the time).
Ok, A Scary Movie is the sort of thing you could watch at Halloween.
Event Horizon. A Sci-fi horror where everyone aboards worst nightmares come true. Stars Laurence Fishburn, Sam Neill and Wurzel Gummage's son, Sean Pertwee.
I'd also go with the original 'The Haunting', or 'An American Werewolf in London'.
'Carrie' is always good. Few bits that'll make you jump too. If not that, then Christina Aguilera's new music video is pretty damn scary.

Thank you for all the ideas. In the end 'The Shining' won out but will look out for others mentioned.
