I rang Talk Talk today, I got Eve with an Indian accent. She wished me a happy Halloween, I told her I do not do Halloween. She replied oh we do we are in the middle of a huge Halloween party at the moment!!
I didn't know they celebrated it in India.

Neither did I Caran, it's a new one on me.
They don't, but it is part of the Indian call centre ethos to submerge themselves in British 'culture', which is why they are forced to watch Eastenders!
Oh, yes they did, jno, albeit in a different manner. I remember my father carving me a turnip lantern in 1958.

jno that has surprised me.
I never saw a trick or treater till the 90s, Blackadder.

In fact I don't see them now as I have the lights off and am hiding behind the sofa.
I'm with BlackadderV - I can remember 'Trick or Treat' in the late 50s early 60s, when we were allowed out 'til all hours without supervision.
I too went out "guising" in the mid to late 50's,it has been on the go for a long time but is now very Americanised, and includes more adults than it used to years ago.
ah well, I never saw any but being around London you don't get these old country traditions.
Agatha Christie wrote a mystery novel call 'Hallowe'en Party', published in 1969, so the custom must have been well established then.
Reminds me of when I was in Tesco last week, i was buying a few toys in a sale to put away for Christmas and the Asian girl who scanned em at the till asked if they were indeed christmas presents. The convo went something like this...

me: yes they are ,getting them while they're cheap.
Her: yeah I got some too, to put away
me: Oh, do you do Christmas then?
her: well no, but we're getting a tree, doing presents for the kids, and having turkey
me (laughing) but you don't do Christmas

We both laughed our heads off :-)
