Maigret from the '60's was also British

"We're the Sweeney son and we haven't had our dinner..."

The finest episode of that great series was on ITV4 a week or two back. Series 4 Episode 1, "Messenger of the Gods". Guest starring the late Diana Dors as the formidable Mrs Rix and Malcolm McFee ("Please Sir") as Lukey Sparrow. Lukey is about to marry Linda Rix, Diana Dors' daughter. A while prior to his nuptials the theft of a quantity of Mercury takes place (hence the title). George & Jack place Lukey in the frame, but he has an alibi - he spent the night with another woman. The rest of the episode involves George & Jack interviewing Lukey whilst Linda's mother tries to get him released from the Nick in time for the wedding.

Episode 2 of the final series ("Hard Men") is almost as good. Guest starring James Cosmo as Sergeant Davy Freeth who is sent from Glasgow in pursuit of three villains. Jack has to meet him off the train and has a note on his desk "Meet Scotch looney 1pm Euston". Davy sees it and their relationship goes downhill from there.
