Let's hope when football eventually resumes the players are told not to spit - that goes for other sports, too.
I'm sure the Methodists outlawed expectoration way back.
It's not a criminal offence, per se, other than in those few areas where the local council has introduced a bye-law specifically banning it. However anti-littering laws can be used to tackle the problem:

In some instances it can be an assault too.
I think it used to be before TB was eradicated. It is illegal to spit at someone though.
It's sort of a Flemish custom I believe.
LOL (or should that be 'groan'?) @ Sanmac!
I expect it is San.
I guess a groan, or even disbelieving shake of the head:)
Hate to see people spit, think it's disgusting.
As a kid in the 60's I remember all the Glasgow busses used to have a sign saying "no spitting" This was obviously because of TB
I can remember the 'No Spitting' signs on the bus's in my neck of the woods to, Sam ( wasn't Glasgow ).
There once was a fellow called Tealing
Who got on a bus to West Ealing
It said on the door
"Don't spit on the floor"
So he promptly spat up on the ceiling.
Always remembered them being there tony, but about a year ago I took a trip to the Glasgow transport museum, and it brought back a whole lot of memories.
Hope you're well and keeping safe ; )
I can't understand how a person walking around the streets can produce and expel on demand, so to speak, such a mass of glutinous, gooey, gobstance. I'm a smoker, and I can't produce such stuff...Where do they get it from...Anyway, it's really disgusting!!
Sam, there is a bus museum only a few miles from where I live, maybe out of interest I should go have a look see if the older buses still have the 'No Spitting' signs.

Yeah I'm fine ( but bored witless ), hope you and yours are to, Sam.
We're agreed that spitting is uttterly vile, some of these images make me wonder what on earth is being spat up.

As for the No Smoking, No Spitting, Use Bins sign, that baffles me...

I remember a sign in our local swimming baths when I was a kid, no spitting, no running, no bombing and no heavy petting !
What's wrong with heavy petting??
Is it only me when I glance randomly, I seem to see it all.

I absolutely abhor it - a new guy on the block - every time he leaves the house - a big spit emanates from him.

just looking at neighbour (male) talking to his daughter-in-law from down the path, he kept picking at his ear, looking at it. OMG - had to close the blinds. Disgusting.
