Yes it is a natural function, but there are also many other natural functions that we possess but still don't find the need to display them openly in public.

I ought to get a booth on the end of the pier........LoL
I can understand Claridges not wanting people to openly breastfeed in their tea rooms. Being in the middle of London, there are people of all cultures who go there for afternoon tea. And before the anti Muslim bridgade start to squark - many people of much older generations would not be overjoyed at the sight either - I know my Mum would be quite offended because people just didn`t do that "in their day". There are plenty of other parts of Claridges the lady could go if she wanted to breastfeed but she wouldn`t have been able to make her point and bleat about it on Twitter if she had.
I thought the link would show a mother feeding her baby indiscreetly - it doesn't.
I was forced to breastfeed my son in toilet cubicles on many occasions when he was a baby, 17 years ago breast feeding facilities were few and far between, especially in the area where we live. I did get told to leave one cafe in Lytham St Annes once as I was allegedly offending someone, I failed to see how as I was in a booth at the back of the cafe with my back towards any other patrons.
demand feeding is just as it says,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, demand feeding. impossible to arrange breast feeding at certain times......... big mistake Claridges.
Luckily I didn't have to do that, Daffy.....thirty odd years ago. My breast feeding days were in Canada......even that far back the Canadians were much more grown up and friendly about it.....I'd have hated feeding in the loo....or making my life so restricted I couldn't enjoy my baby and have a life too....

I'd rather sit next to a breast feeding mum than someone who makes a fuss about it....now, that attitude is concerning....x
Just because it is 'natural' doesn't mean it's acceptable. So is sex and going to the toilet but you don't do that in the middle of a café. It is still 'nudity' in a public place!
I, personally don't care if they want to do it in public and I am not offended in the slightest, but I never did it and I can understand people not liking it.I would have either done it discretely which is very easy or gone and sat in the loo, or worked around feeding times so that I didn't have to. I would be embarrassed at bearing boobs in public. I can understand not liking having to go into the toilets though, it feels pretty unhygienic , but all they have to do is provide a nice armchair within the toilet area.
Looking at the picture she was discreet, now if she got both boobies out and flashed at the staff well .....
I really don't understand the issue. It's a boob that's not even on display.

I don't care whatever the moansters say....if my baby needed feeding, I'd feed him/her....botox to anyone who complains. I think complainers should be hung, drawn and quartered...!!!
I never bared boobs in public.....I breast fed on demand though....and the day I accepted a nice armchair to feed a baby in a toilet hell would freeze over....x
comfy chair in a toilet ? would anyone like to have a meal in a public toilet ?
o come on, do you really think a baby that's feeding from you on a chair in a bright room knows that it is in a toilet? Seriously strange comment. Just coz English public toilets are gross!
I still cannot see any indiscretion in the link.

I also find the constant juxtaposition of 'well going to the toilet is natural too' when related to feeding (yes, feeding,eating/drinking/nourishment)an infant quite frankly ludicrous.

We are discussing feeding.
ganesh - of course the baby doesn't know where it is. The Mother, however, is perfectly well aware of 'her place' in both senses of the phrase.
when one is breast feeding, why should mum be isolated in a public toilet as what she is doing is the most natural thing for her and her baby ?
I was responding to the argument that 'breastfeeding is a natural act' and therefore fine to do in public.
Not everything that is a natural act is suited to being done in public - however feeding your child discreetly is.
As I said ann, I am fine with it, but I can understand why some object, it is public nudity, and I'm just saying it can be done discretely and I don't think going into another room to do it is 'isolating' you.
