Does anyone remember a sort of museum at (I think) Blackpool, about 55 /60 years ago, that had lots of glass jars filled with pickled brains, deformed foetuses, all sorts of repulsive things that would horrify a child. I think they also had a bearded lady. I don't know where I dredged this up from.
o I haven't been to Blackpool Caran, but I do remember our school having a huge glass jar with a two headed calf in it, our science teacher was a farmer and it was born on his farm. I shuddered every time I walked past as it was in the entrance to the science lab.
Our Sunday school trips were very tame then compared to yours! We went to the East coast to laugh ourselves silly in the parade of funny mirrors which made us look fat/tall/ugly/dumpy - how we loved them!!
Yes - there is the remnants of it in the big pleasure ground to the south - or there was when I was last there, but all the nasty nasties had been removed.
Mind you, there were enough walking about to replace them.
I remember those mirrors too Ann. I'm only guessing about the Sunday School trips though. We also went on trips from Dads social club. I can just about remember a long line of us kids filing through said museum and not being very happy at what we were seeing.
Good heavens Ann where did you find that? There was a bit in the middle that looked familiar, why did they let it live or something like that. Isn't it strange how the mind works and throws up some memories.
In case any of you are suffering from withdrawal symptoms, and you find yourself in Edinburgh then a visit to the Royal College of Surgeons museum will fascinate you.
Dozens of weird and wonderful specimens in glass bottles .
