the above is so the spoiler does not appear before those that do not want to read it.
Ok we know that this film and it's forerunner occur chronologically before the original TV series. Therefore Pike must not die so how come they let him die in this?

I'm no expert, but I don't think 'The Cage' pilot had a stardate, so could be a while before the original series?
But, chelle, there was the 2 parter The Menagerie where Spock is court-martialled for hijacking The Enterprise so that he can take Pike back to that planet.

p.s. I haven't seen the new film yet but don't mind spoilers.
Of course, thanks bibble, how did I forget that?

I haven't seen the film yet either, but loved the trailer shown before Iron Man this week.
Anyway I did a little digging for an explanation (you can explain away anything in sci-fi!)

because it is now an alternative timeline, caused by the romulans in the first film

so there will be differences

Nice one excelsior, a typical JJ Abrams device to allow this sort of plot change.
For info there is also S1E11-12, The Menagerie1/2 where a very disabled Pike is taken back to Talos 4.
