I am against religious slaughter in the uk, for animal welfare reasons only. This has nothning to do with racism at all. It has been reported in the papers than muslim inmates are suing the prison service for being served ham sandwiches for ramadan. I have now discovered that all Tesco lamb and chicken apart from Willow Farm and Finest Free Range lines from are halal, and the animal is recited an islamic prayer during slaughter.
I have been buying Tesco healthy living chicken for my family for a long time and now to my horror discover this is halal. As a Christian do I have any rights to sue for this, what about my human rights and my freedom of religioun rights, I feel they have both been violated.

Take your time coming back......................
You can't sue!
However, I also have issues about how Halal meat is produced.

"The animal must die by bleeding!"

I understand that people have different religious beliefs and I respect them.
However, I still think that praying over an animal while it is hung upside down and slowly bled to death is cruel!

I think we all agree, CJ but it was the compensation request that did it I think...
more seriously, the practices of kosher and halal are all but the same owing to the historical need to ensure freshness of meat in a summer 30 degree+ climate - just like so many other practices re meat and fish prep as well as handling dead humans and all the rest......so if Tesco are practising halal they are de facto going kosher too - and given their Hebrew origins one can appreciate that.

If you object to these observations, then, as many have suggested, buy local, go veggie, or just fall in an open pit grave with hot coals it..........Or you coould take the issue up with Archbishop Rowan Williams whom, I am sure, would love some reason to digress from all his bishes leaving to join the German Pope.
My husband saw a halal butcher loading meat into his van from the back of a regular butcher - that can't be right.
well upfront go and buy from a local butcher as many have suggested, or go veggie, or thrwo yourself in an open pit with hot charcoal in it.....

there's not much difference between halal and jewish practices as to slaughter as they need to ensure the meat is fresh (and why they have strong fish preferences or anti-pork, owing to the presence of worms), or even get their dead humans out of the house and into the ground inside 24 hours (with a free set of 6 glasses if you remember your Monty P) as managing life in a M-East summer with temps >35 degrees Centigrade..........

Your other option is to take this subject up with that glorious inept in Lambeth Palace who, I am sure, would love some diversion from his bishes leaving to join the German Pope in the Vatican.
Sorry, I am a complete atheist.
I eat meat but I try not to think about the fact that it was once an animal.
The thought that it suffered for the sake of religion makes me want to cry!
Looks like your not the only one who does not agree with religious slaughter

personally as long as its dispatch is quick, its gutting clean, it is properly hung, and it tastes good, I don't care.

"All things bright and beautiful"
I also feel strongly about this too. Ignore all the pillocks on here auntsallyann, they are just wind up merchants. Enjoy your halal guys and everything else which is eliminating british culture!
well there's a historical oxymoron of first class degree level historically - British culture.....?????
Smart DT I meant halal was taking over British slaughter, which means British farmers loose out yet again! I have not come on here to argue the toss with the likes of you. I have voiced my opinion and you have voiced yours, why the sarcasm. Good bye.
As a retired Trading Standards(Food) Officer, may I add my tuppence here?
I have witnessed both Halal(Moselm) & Shechita (Jewish) Ritual Slaughter of animals.
I can assure you that,as razor sharp instrument is used, which severs the animals main neck arteries and nerves to the brain, the animal dies almost instantly(within seconds and NOT the time you seem to think).
Contrast this with the type of slaughter that you would prefer(and is indeed used for most slaughter of animals for non Moslem & Jewish meat eaters).
This merely stuns(but does not kill the animal) the animal is then gutted (whilst still able to feel pain) I have seen many animals slaughtered in all three ways, and see they way that they react to the disemboweling, and I know which way I would prefer if I were the animal.
I am sorry, but I get the feeling that your question is really racially & religiously motivated, and not prompted by the welfare of the animal.
on this one, I have no objection to the slaughter of animals to any ethno/cultural/religious code as long as its hygenic, reasonably quick etc etc.

My sarcasm is that over the centuries the Britishness in us has come from many immigrant groups over the century and of different cultural and religious values and bases. Just remember that the name England stems from the germanic settlers known as the Ingles from Anglo Saxon times and its well doucmented in early history the various immigrant groups that came into the UK back into BC times and way beyond...... And muslims, jewish folk, hindus, whatever continue to add their richness to our identity. This is a positive note in frequently often quoted negatives.......
CJ242,
Please see my answer.
In Halal & Shechita the animal is dead within a few seconds, and is THEN bled;it is no longer alive when it is being bled.
UK slaughter laws are very clear. All animals must be stunned prior to slaughter with the exception of Halal and Kosher meats. However, these animals must be slaughtered for the consumption of Muslims and Jews.
It is obvious this is not happening. It is not just Tesco but most supermarkets including Waitrose and selling Halal meat without labelling it. 90% of New Zealand lamb sold in the UK is Halal.
