i was quoted £135+ vat by a local village law firm. they said this would go up to £200-£300 +vat depening on the complexity (if you add life interest etc).
Good grief bernie - I paid £50 all in at a solicitor's and they keep it saved securely for no extra charge. Big sis did exactly the same, we had a joint appointment, for the same fee. The fee covered 2 visits including signing the wills.
I believe that Age Concern will help you to make a will without charging. They hope that you will leave a legacy for them (does not have to be a large amount) but do not make it a condition of their help. Why not give them a call to ask?
bernie, we made our wills some years ago, with the help of a local solicitors. I don't think they were very expensive, but whatever it was (and even if it had been expensive), it's really worth the expense. And about 6 months, we dug them out and realised that they were in need of revision and updating. Which we did with the help of a friend whose business it now is to help people make wills. (he used to be an actuary). We are so pleased that we've got our wills up to date - there is always the worry that, if you don't make a will, then all or most of your money will go to the government - and none to the people in your life who matter!

Just look around and find someone who can help you do it for not so much money - you won't regret it!
I paid £75 just over a year ago. I'd say that a local solicitor wouldn't charge too much and, more importantly, know what they're doing.
Doesn't your bank do a service? we made ours out with the Nat-West for £50 a couple of years ago this incuded storage of the will and a covering letter with all the reference numbers etc anybody would need to retrieve the will
