More shoplifting during the day, more poaching at night.

What sort of crime?
Question Author
any crime -just crime in general ,we imagine the burglar creeping along in the darkness ready to break in your house -but is he more likely to creep in the daytime ? are we safer in the day or at night?
I don't think you are asking for a reasonable comparison - there is more drunk/disorderly street fighting at night than day, and more little old ladies getting their purses pinched during the day.

However, according to one website:

Most crime, especially domestic break-ins, occur in daylight

That beggars the question - do you mean daytime, or daylight? It is still light at 10pm but that is not daytime.

Domestic burglaries are more likely to happen during the day. Sound travels more at night, so breaking glass would alert neighbours; there is more possibility of the householder being at home during the night; strangers are suspicious at night - in the day they could be about their lawful business; people are more likely to pop out and leave a door or window open during the day.

Factory and office burglaries are more likely to be night time.

....... and the days are longer in summer, whatever hemisphere you are in. Therefore on the reasonable assumption that the average rate of crime is constant, the crime rate by daytime is greater in the summer and less in the winter. QED.
