this is the first time I have ever had a mobile phone contract so sorry for being naive! The contract comes to an end in a few weeks and I don't want to upgrade or get another phone on contract as I am just not using it enough and it has been costing approx 45 per month. Do I just keep the phone even though it won't work any more or do I have to give it back? I just want to get a cheap phone on pay as you go

yep, the phone is yours but make sure you cancel the contract or it will continue to work and youll be charged accordingly. Most providers ask for a months notice.

What do you use your phone for? you may be able to get a new contract phone for as little as 10 a month including free calls and texts depending on the provider. who are you with?

if you get another contract phone (from any provider) you can also keep the same mobile number if you ask for a PAC code from your old provider and give it to new one. This servoice is usually free but i dont know if it is possible with a pay as you go phone.

I would consider a contract for 10 a month I am with Orange and when first getting the phone it was supposed to be 35 a month but they failed to say about the VAT. I tried to take it back after getting the first bill but they told me the next bills would definitely be 35. They wern't!
first of all you have to put in writing that you want the contract to end and send it to your provider at least 30 days before you want the contract to end if you do not put it in writing and get a reply you will carry on getting charged every month. make sure that you get it in writing the phone is usually yours to keep once you have had the contract terminated.most phones can be unlocked if they are tied to a network.remember to keep all your paper work safe for a good few months( i keep mine for at least 2 years)

I didn't know I had to give notice in writing, the contract ends at the end of the month so it isn't possible to give 30 days notice so will I get charged for June now as well? They already contacted me last month to see if they could get me to upgrade and I told them I didh't want to
take care if you are with orange i had a lot of trouble with them.over the phone they told me my contract would just end and then they carried on charging me every month for a phone and calls that i could not make. make sure that you get it in writing and check you bank balance
ok, well what id would do is call orange customer service and say youre gonna leave at end of contract, hopefully they will want you to stay and then you can see what deal you can get. Use an example of a cheaper provider. I just got my parents an 18 month contract with vodafone for 10 a month including free eve and weekend calls and free texts (200 i think).

the worst they can do is say they wont give you a cheap deal (make sure you ask for new phone too, but you wont get anything flash) and if they wont then shop around.

The websites for the main providers are a good start. Oranges cheapest plan online is 15 a month but sometimes you can get better rate if you call them.
oh and stay away from the 3 network as well. They are the worst for customer services.

i didnt end mine in writing when i left orange ad i had no problem with them accepting my termination over the phone. You will be charged up to the 8th June if you call today so will get a smaller bill.

Make sure you check if you have already paid the line rental in advance, it will say on your bills.

so if I write the letter now and post it tomorrow can I give notice even though it won't be 30 days and just cancel the direct debit with bank after this months payment?
oh and i agree with Donna, 3 are uselss for customer services. Vodafone are still UK based from what i can tell.
When u end your contract the phone is yours to keep and they can change your sim to pay as you go so u can keep your number too. They dont charge for that. Hope this helps.
what make and model of phone have you got
just call them, explain the contract is costing you too much and you want to move it to another provider, keep saying no thats not good enough every time they offer you a cheaper contract or better deal and eventually they will more or less pay you to stay with them.

oh but if you do end the contract the phone is yours, and if there is any they also have to remove all locks on the phone for free so it can be used with another provider
