i have signed missives for a new house. Is it possible to now pull out of buying the property?

Have you exchanged contracts with the seller? - this is the critical point after which pulling out will cost you significant money.
Are you in Scotland? If so, no you can't pull out, read this:

"The solicitors sign the Missive letters on behalf of their respective clients. Once Missives are concluded, a legally binding contract exists from which neither party may withdraw without liability to damages for breach of contract."
Ah, so 'missives' relates to legislation in Scotland. I 'missived' that!
