Some of the roads in our town have been given 20mph speed limits. Yeah yeah, I know.

I've just been looking through some copies of the ArseGas from last week. There was a survey, carried out with a radar gun company, to find out if the traffic was obeying the new limit.

The percentage of cars which obeyed the 20mph limit was ... 4.23%

Even some cyclists were going faster than that. Probably me, actually, lol

Are any other local authorities experimenting with 20mph speed limits?

Bristol has joined that club, big time.
Lots of cities seem interested in introducing it, but the Police do not seem at all interested in enforcing such limits, it would seem;

Often I feel it would be nice to reach 20 mph
@ Ahh the plaintive cry of the put-upon commuter :) Having to drive in and out of London on a regular basis, I can relate... :)
It's a ridiculous imposition anyway. One can see a reason to compensate for incompetent councils that put schools on busy roads, but not elsewhere. 30 mph has been fine for decades. A road is supposed to be a dangerous place, people ought not expect to be wrapped in cotton wool and remain in perfect safety all their lives impinging on others in the process. There ought to be a sanity check for those who want to get into power and pass this nonsense. It is a prime example of how society is being made as ludicrous thing these days. 20 today, 10 tomorrow, 3 the day after. When are these people going to be prevented from ruining everything ?
There's a stretch of road about a mile from us passing a school, very busy road with lots of bus and commercial traffic as well as your normal local usage. Three times a day at school times we get flashing lights to indicate a 20mph speed limit, most drivers just ignore them.
Our local council has introduced 20mph for quite a few side roads and re-inforced it with speed bumps on various rat runs. Some roads need it imo.
How council is strap't for cash and yet put up 20 mph limit's on all streets new posts and 20mph mark't on the road in paint must have cost a fortune stupid
There are 20mph zones all over here and I don't think you can actually drive anywhere in my area without hitting a massive speed bump either!

It's a tad overkill imo...
The only places I've ever seen speed traps for 20 is Bushy and Richmond Parks.
I really wish they would do this in the village where I live, my house is on the main road through the village and when the buses and lorries go rumbling past at 30+ the whole house shakes.
I was pulled in by the police some years ago for going too slow - I was doing 45 when I should have been doing 50
That is ridiculous Connemmara, what did you say?
oh yes, 20mph, enforced by speed bumps, which seems to work quite well.
I welcome it for residential estates and outside schools at opening/closing time - should be like the US and double fines for the latter..... the chances of serious injury are more than cut in half from going from 30mph to 20.....
