I have just received my renewal notice for house and contents insurance. The premium has increased by 50 (fifty!) % since last year. Why is this?

Best person to ask is the Insurance Company rabet, it sounds as if someone has made a mistake. If they don't come up with a sensible answer and offer a reduction I would look elsewhere.By the way my premium has only gone up by £15 but I have had an extension on the property.
have you claimed?
Question Author
No, I haven't claimed.
Could it be you were given a discount last year for being a new customer? If so, the discount will have been removed. I suggest you phone them and say you are not renewing because of the price and they might give you the discount again.
I would definitely shop around and i bet that if you approach your company, advising them you have got a better quote elsewhere, their price will plummet. I did this quite innocently i.e. just rang to say I wouldn't be renewing and they dropped the price, offered me vouchers and allsorts. Game of cat and mouse! I am with M&S now ((no gimmicks, just (to my surprise) came up with v.g. quote)) and cost went up by £1 a month when I renewed. I know someone who insures via the bank and pays 4 yes 4 times as much as I do!
Forgot to say I had a claim (first one) a while back and all dealt with over the phone and sorted.
