The car's bonnet and front is badly smashed in. It was parked while my friends wife was visiting her mother.
My friend is going through his insurance but DPD claim its nothing to do with them as the driver is self employed. The DPD van is clearly and fully sign-written..
Surely its their van and insured by them is it not?

If the driver is fully self-employed he may well own or lease the van. DPD do sell owner-driver franchises, in any case her insurance company should be sorting it out
The driver is likely to be self employed with his own insurance, but DPD should act as the link between your friend and the driver. They may not be allowed to release his personal details to him, but if he emails/write to them they should pass stuff on.
Otherwsie your friends insurer will do it.
Did the driver leave his details? If not it's a hit-and-run and the police should be informed.
Tell your friend its not his/her problem... their insurance company will claim from the drivers insurance (or from DPDs)
The driver is personally liable, he can claim off whatever insurance covers him. The van owner is irrelevant. If he is not insured then you mate will have to get his own insurer to pay out and pursue the driver.
Her insurer's will be able to tell who insured it via the registration number. For a small fee, she could find out for herself:

Thanks for clarifying. His insurance and Police are on to it. He has a supplied hire vehicle now.
The friend has everything under control
and even if the other fella is uninsured, your frenz insurance will pay ( and premiums to up but everything has a downside)

Now....
Hope Hospital ( youknow where ill people go) contractor wiped out my frenz Bentley ( we wd rather have the bent bentley I can tell you) and the driver gave his employers details and "I am at fault"
and the company,
the school leeva at the company gave the standard AB reply " Foo what all dat about den? ooo no, we dont do any of that - ooo no"
And so we went frooda run around of MIB, and I was gonna tell the CEO of the Hospital ( you know where the ill people are) that he was employing an uninsured company.....

and the chief honcho of the company rang ( I was just about to allege criminal activity - viz lack of insurance. I think I had chucked in explosives and terrorism: the driver LOOKED forrin)
rang and said " we are insured, I dont kn.ow why you were told we werent"

and and and - it was a cheap write off, we cdnt insist on repaid AND the police later contacted me to say that I had been spotted driving around Ashby de la Zouche, cheap write off chip-shopped
