Hi. When I kneel down and stand up my left knee cap makes like a crunching noise. It's when I bend it aswell. I'm 20 and it's done it since I can remember. I broke the bones in my shin (tibia and fibula I think) when I was 8 in a car crash...could this have caused it? And is it serious. Any info please?

Both my knees have made a cracking noise on kneeling then getting up, for as long as I can remember & I am 57! If you're concerned best to contact your GP.
You may well have Osgood Schlatters disease, its not that serious but you may want to see a physiothrapist.
I don't think it's anything to do with your shin. I think you just have didgy knees, like me and a million other not-that-old people! maybe go to an osteopath for advice.

i have the same problem and was worried but when i went to college i found i learnt that most joint cracking problems are just excess cartalidge and nothing to worry about!! but as already said if you are still worried do see ur GP.

Good luck x x

Thank you. I'm gonna make an appointment at the doctors. :)
10-1 he diagnoses "crepitus -it's nothing to worry about". My knees sometimes wake the kids when I go up stairs at night (well, it seems like they should!).
Osgood Schlatters disease- if u had that u wud notice a growth just below the knee...my knees crack all the time, however mine is painful..and sometimes when i walk my left knee feels like its going to pop out..?? ne one have ne comments on what it cud be??

Krissy,  My son has Osgood Schlatters disease and yes he has dirty great lumps under his knees, almost like second kneecaps.  See a GP for a diagnosis, but it certainly sounds like Osgood Schlatters.  It was very painful when he was younger and still gives him trouble on occasions and his knees use to 'give way'.

Osgood Schlatters is not a dangerous disease and is reasonably common in older children and teenagers.  It's not a 'disease' as such.  It is caused by irregular growth spurts causing muscle to tear from the bone.  It does improve as you get older.  If it is Osgood Schlatters, your GP will tell you how to cope with it and what type of exercise to avoid, e.g. jumping should be avoided.
