What makes a long-life battery long-life, and are the ingredients actually more expensive to produce than yer common or garden short-life variety?

Virtually all consumer batteries are alkaline batteries, but long-life batteries are constructed differently to allow the battery to discharge a lot of power quickly and then reatore their energy quickly. It's the process of constructing them which creates the extra cost.
