Does a PAT testing machine need an electrical supply or can it work correctly either powered by a generator or a 12v supply going through an invertor?

I have a Seaward Supernova and it takes quite a bit of load when it starts up so I think the 12 volt inverter would be out of the question and be aware it your running a PAT tester from a generator as my old tester picked up that the genny had no earth and wouldn't work and kept going into fault....
