How bad am I?

I've been the only person in the office for the last 5 hours as everyone is either on leave or has a family crisis. I normally only work until 2.45 but have said I'd stay until 5pm today. Trouble is I know there is a report I should be finishing and a quiet office is an ideal opportunity but I can't motivate myself at all today. I normally work really hard (not just cos there are other people in the office) and do far more hours than I should but today I just want to either chat on AB or read a book. Is this bad?

You normally work hard because you know you only have to do so til 2.45. Say s0d it and go home.
Do you want an honest answer or a patronising one?

Both Mrs Raven?
Your problem is indicative of modern working environments nowadays, sadly. Management will never see the real problems with overstretching existing staff to their limits until there are none (staff that is). My situation is similar. you have my sympathy. ;)

Actually when I say I work hard I mean I should finish work at 2pm but always stay until 2.45 and I go to meetings in the evenings and weekends. I'm employed 20 hours but always work at least 25 or more. Does this help with the question of whether this afternoons 'laziness' is bad or not!
I do not think it is laziness. You sound conscientious in you r usual willingness to stay later. You are not bad. Remember you were contracted to fulfil a role and you already do more than that. The true responsibilty for this situation is not yours. Upper levels delegate responsibility downwards including the decision. it is important that you look lokng and hard at your actual role and what you are willing to give. maybe you could ask for extra hours as paid if possible, or extra time if you have a flexitime agreement?I have been in and out of office environments for over 20 years. stress is at an all time high. there are many reasons for thism but you are the important one here. No prizes for heading for a breakdown!!

Thanks Bee35 - It's funny isn't it if you are conscientious you always feel that you are not working hard enough or that you are lazy even though I know I do a good job and above and beyond too.
Sure is! Am off now to start the other job - cooking tea for the kids :) Hope you get thru afternoon ok. I Meant to stay late today as younger son was not at school but didn't, which is why I'm home here!!
Flexitime will suffer for it though. all the best :)
