Would anyone recommend a good national car dealership such as Dixon Motors or Carcraft etc?

Yep - I have used these people on two occasions and no problemos :o)
http://www.gtcar.co.uk/
Not a car dealership but a car brokerage - try www.drivethedeal.com. I saveed 6,000 on MLP.
I work for an executive corporate transport provider (ok, cab firm) in Northwest London and I would say at least half of our company cars and driver-owned vehicles came from The Great Trade Centre in Hythe Road, London NW10. I understand they have other locations too and you can check out their inventory online at http://www.greattradecentre.co.uk/
They're as cheap as chips and for the most part the vehicles they sell are trouble-free. My own car came from there in 2001 and (touch wood) I have never had a problem with it that wasn't the direct result of my wife bumping it into a something or someone. I should perhaps mention therefore that I've never had to trouble their after-sales service personally but I understand their 'customer care team' can be something of a challenge. For strict value for money they are hard to beat.

One word of advice: don't bother with their extended warranty - it's not worth the paper it's written on.
Just realised that PaulB has provided a different link to the same firm - pop into our office for a cuppa next time you're buying some wheels, Paul - we're the cab firm in the same road. Bring Hobnobs!
not the greatest help in the world but my other half bought a new fiesta frfom a place in slough that imports them, saved a couple of grand and the only difference was the service book was in german. she found them on the web, sorry i cant tell u more
I would thoroughly recommend Carland (we went to the one in Chertsey, Surrey). We were only looking while waiting to hear if our car was going to be written off or not due to an accident and didn't have the deposit to buy but we saw one that we really liked which was marked up for 13k but they sold it to us for 10k and no deposit. not bad for a supermarket!!
Try www.motorpoint.co.uk I have bought a car recently from them and saved 6000 on a car that listed at 19500
