The smell of formaldehyde appears to be different for different people. Generally, it has a strong pugnent odour both in liquid or powder (paraformaldehyde) form.
Needless to say, it is not advisable to smell it. It can make you very sick. When mixed with a common potassium based crystal it becomes a very lethal poisonous gas.

Formaldehyde does smell quite strongly. At work we had an archive with dead locusts in cabinets ' they had been soaked in formaldehyde. It's pungent and makes your tummy turn a bit. Ten times worse than that 'hospital smell'..
