I have never had one and as far as I know never seen one.  Now I need one.  This is Toorak's fault re her post about, "A Little Life" with James Norton.

I bought the book.  It's about 2' thick in the timiest writing in a book I have ever seen.  So I decided to look on Amazon and there are so many I need your help in choosing one.  Whether I will ever use it again after ALLife, who knows.

I want one that is easy to use but has everything I am likely to need.  Price?  I guess I'll pay whatever I need to.  Help anyone?  Please.

The Guardian calls it amiable and undemanding. I sometimes like 'amiable and undemanding' in between other books which need concentration.

Will give it a go, its next on my list once I've finished The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, and report back.

bhg...if you're talking about physical books, it's not good for those who don't drive, or someone who wants the adaptability of ebooks. Though I know many books are available in ebook format from libraries now too.

I buy books on impulse...then finally read them months later. 😉🙄

I get ebooks from 4 different libraries, too.

pasta - No, I was talking about ebooks. I used to borrow a whole stack of books from various libraries when going on holiday in Europe for 6 weeks. As I read them I returned them via the internet and, when I'd read most of them, took out some more.

Download Kindle to your Windows PC or laptop here

I can borrow around 40 ebooks a month from the public libraries.

Fine to read ebooks on a laptop but it's a bit of a fag to take it on the bus with you. My wife takes hers everywhere and reads whilst we're waiting at the doctor/dentist etc.

If you don't have an ereader you can read the ebook on the bigger screen of your laptop or tablet at home, and on your mobile phone whilst out and about.  The devices synch.

I agree that a dedicated eReader gives a much better experience but it could be a sledgehammer to crack a nut if you only want to read one ebook

//// I'm not surprised his books are often cut price.////

Neither am I - appallingly badly written IMHO.

As regards Kindle, I wouldn't be without mine now - I enlarge the print in bed so I don't have to wear my reading glasses.

I also get free and very cheap ebooks from BookBub.  I get an email every day with a selection of books, many are dreadful but there are some very good books amongst them.  You choose the genres that interest you.

I read A Little Life some years ago and it is one of those books that stay with you.  I hope you enjoy it Ladybirder - if enjoy is the right word.

It is a powerful read heart wrenching and tender too.  A terrific novel but a bit grim in parts.

So sorry got caught up with visitors.  BUT I have sorted my problem and am actually listening to A Little Life now on my laptop having discovered Audiology.  £14+.  Bargain.  Never dreamt I would be actually listening to it today.

Fabulous!  I wish I could listen to books being read but my mind wanders.  I feel I should be looking at something or doing something

I love mine.  It was a gift and lots of my favourite texts were put onto it for me.  I don't know how to add to them.  Really useful when you are sitting a waiting-room etc..

I have several short stories available to download onto Kindles (courtesy of nice son-in-law) but I can't in all honesty help in any way re. selection or how to work it.  I just  read on mine.

Good luck,  maybe I'll learn how to work it from the answers.

^^^Same as Barry. I can't concentrate. I really need to see the written word in order to absorb anything.

I hope you enjoy it.

I too am on my 2nd kindle, this time I got a paperwhite. I love it. I have over 700 books stored on there. I wouldn't be without it.

Jourdain...if you have an Amazon account....search 'kindle books'...find what you want...purchase.

Put things you're interested in on your wishlist if you want to monitor the price.

I forgot...when you purchase it is then downloaded to your kindle or kindle app.

lb, if you enjoy audiobooks you can download free ones from public libraries.  They are in demand so you may have to reserve and wait, but you get notified when they are available to download.

Had mine for over 10 years wouldn't be without it,  I read in bed every night, no need to put the bedside light on and disturb Mr Fruit
