Today is the 42nd anniversary of the death of Elvis. Scary eh? He has been dead for as long as he was alive. Does anyone remember where they were when they heard that he had died?
Yes I do , I was going to work to start at 7-30 am in a general office of a large factory, it was a warm August morning and people from the factory were coming out after their night shift after hearing the news
I heard it on the radio before I left for school. My friend and I were discussing it whilst we walked.
My first two years at secondary school was in a different building, this was the first day of third year and at a school building a long walk from home.
I was never far from a radio and I heard mention of Elvis a few times that morning but didn't take much notice because my cousin was down staying with us from Luton. We went into town on the bus and on the way home, spent a lot of time stamping in muddly puddles whilst trying to cover each other with muddy water. When we got home, we heard about Elvis dying.
I saw a newspaper headline in the back of a car in a campsite. I confess I wasn't that bothered; he'd become just another Vegas attraction. As for Marc Bolan, I didn't hear about it for months.
Elvis was before my time really and I was fairly young when he died so I didn`t really have any interest about Vegas. He was just Elvis. I did like Marc Bolan though.
I was never a big fan and can't say it was that it affected me much. However, I appreciate his voice much more these days. The only death that I remember really affecting me was President Kennedy. I was 15 I can remember exactly the spot I was standing in in the house when I heard it on the news.
