I have just upgraded my G4 and bought a blisteringly fast G5. I also have a set of Apple Pro speakers, which don't fit the analogue audio socket on the G5. The Apple site just says these speakers "don't work with the G5", but I wonder if they would if I just put a new plug on the end. Has anyone tried this? If so, what is the wiring?

Isn't that wierd. Is it because the Apple Pro speakers draw power from the computer via the minijack, and the G5 does not supply ppwer to the jack socket? Perhaps there is some way to use the USB port. I don't know if the Griffin iMic would work.

Hi PlainJane, thanks for your answer.

I have a Griffin iMic too, but it doesn't have the correct socket to take the Pro speaker plug.

FWIW, I have managed to get some sound from the speakers by manually holding some "audio live" wires to the terminals on the plug, but I can't really tell if the volume is just line level or if the speakers need additional power.
The speakers do need power, so you will only be getting them to work as passive (unpowered) speakers, Those clever people at Griffin now make something called the iFire adaptor which, according to their publicity is what you want.
That is interesting. Does the iFire work? I would love to know.
