Hi patty,
we have a Hoover 1300 bought in 03 & still in good working order! xxx
Best makes are Miele or AEG / Bosch (these are the machines used by the likes of Persil to test their powders in many are run 24/ 7 for years at a time) but you won't get either for 250 more like 750 of the Miele.
Personally have had 2 washer /dryers one was an Ariston lasted 12 years of family use currently on a Hoover of 8 yrs ( but the engineer has been out at least three times ) Sounds like a bag of spanners on fast spin but is still going all the same.
Would like to get a Miele next but lack of cash and the o.h. may dictate a cheaper machine.
Try looking in Which magazine at your local library or online (you'll have to register ) to see what they recommend.
Hi

I have just looked at Which and this is one of their best buys. It comes in at about 250 so is about the right price. I cannot say how good Whirlpool washing machines are as have never had one.

Whirlpool AWO/D 5526

I have a whirlpool - Had it for 7 years - do an average of 9 loads a week - never had any problem with it at all - thoroughly recommend the make.

Here's a link to the one recommended by muff13 above.

I particularly like the variable temperature control, so I can do a normal load, but increase the temperature to 50 or 60 which I need to do for my husbands allergies, but I don't always want to do a hot cotton cycle wash.
Seek out a Bosch and you will be rewarded with a long lived machine without a doubt!

Thanks to all for your answers
I LOVE my Bosch, it even tells me how long till the end of the wash. Love my Bosch dryer too. Can you tell, I like Bosch appliances :)
beattie - don't all washing machines do that? mine does and it isn't a bosch.
Annie - they don't all tell you that. Even my Bosch (which I am more than happy with) does not tell me which I do find annoying at times.
There is an excellent site called washerhelp.co.uk, if you google it you should find it. It gives idependent reviews as to the best machine and recommends 5 different makes as their top rated, these include Aeg, Bosch and Zannusi which is particularly rated as a good cheaper machine. Washerhelp makes a good point around the fact that you are better off paying the same money for a good quality machine with less 'bells and whistles' than a cheaper make i.e. indesit, but paying for their top of the range model. All machines in the range regardless of if they are top of the range or not, have the same innards and are likely to break down at the same rate. You are only paying for the extras which you hardly ever use anyway and not for a better quality from the same manufacturer.
Anyway visit the site to have a look, I bought a Bosche after reading the reviews.
Hope this helps, Sue
I've got an AEG Lavamat bought from John Lewis about 6-7 years ago and still going strong. It has the clock that tells you how long the wash has to go - 5 spin speeds and a quick wash button that halvesthe time of any of the washes..And the price wasnt that bad absolutely nothing like 750 that someone mentioned..
We bought a Zanussi last year. 250 from Comet. It's great!
Our Zanussi lasted 8 years before giving up the ghost. Never needed to call anyone out to fix it, and it's been replaced with another Zanussi.
I have AEG and it's twenty two years old.And still going strong [ should not have said that ] something might go wrong now.I have never had a breakdown ect .It was not cheap but well worth the money.g.
My Zanussi lasted 22 years - replaced with another Zanussi
My Zanussi is 15 years old and I've never had any problems with it.
IHave a Siemens machine, it's about 8 -9 years old now and has worked hard, it's been used at least once a day, sometimes 3 loads, and is still going strong, It's the best washer I've ever had!
