i rent a flat and there's a washing machine that's supplied. i looked in the tray where you add the conditioner and it was black with dirt. i cleaned that out but wondered if there's any product out there that 'cleans' the washing machine so my clothes won't whiff

any recommendations please?

Try a hot wash with some soda crystals

if you pull the draw out (carefully) you'll find its not dirt but black mould and there will be a lot more in and around that area i use a spray mould remover in there, then do as people have suggested below and use soda crystal as well, the rubber door seal will probably have mould on to. after each wash ,at night, leave the door open so it will dry out
When people say leave the door open when not in use that means the soap tray as well as the main door, in case you misunderstood.
Check in the folds of the big rubbery door seal. I bet it is caked.
Flash spray with bleach.
